However, achieving the best outcomes requires proper preparation of graphic files. In this article, we present a step-by-step guide to help you prepare your files for DTF printing and ensure a perfect final result.
1. File Format
To ensure the highest print quality, it's recommended to prepare your file in one of the following formats:
- .PNG – Best for raster-based projects and supports transparency.
- .EPS or .PDF – Suitable for fully vector graphics. Fonts should be converted to curves.
Recommended minimum resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch) to ensure sharp details and prevent pixelation.
2. Color Mode: CMYK or RGB?
While CMYK is traditionally used for printing, DTF printing often achieves better results with RGB color space due to enhanced color saturation. Some printers (including ours) support this mode, extending the standard CMYK gamut and even adding FLUO colors.
Tips:
- Avoid excessive color saturation, which may appear different on fabric compared to the screen.
- Use the sRGB color profile for the best compatibility with printing.
3. Transparency and Background
When preparing graphics for DTF printing:
- Remove the background or set it to transparent, especially when using PNG format.
- Maintain sharp edges without semi-transparency for raster graphics to prevent the underlay from showing beyond the print.
4. Lines and Details
To avoid issues during printing:
- Do not use lines thinner than 1 mm—they may not print correctly or could peel off during washing due to insufficient underlay.
- Avoid overly complex elements that may complicate the transfer process onto garments.
5. Checking the Size and Scale of the Project
Before saving the file, make sure:
- The design is prepared in 1:1 scale.
- The entire graphic fits within the workspace.
- Safety margins (preferably 1 mm on each side) are maintained.
6. Test Print and Quality Control
Before sending the final file to the print shop, perform a test print on paper or review the project on a screen at 100% zoom to ensure:
- There are no visible errors.
- Colors are close to expectations.
- Text and lines are legible.
7. Final Export and File Submission
After completing all preparations, save the file in the appropriate format (preferably PNG) with transparency. Before sending it, check that the file:
- Is not overly compressed.
- Has an appropriate name (including the design dimensions and quantity is helpful).
- Is free of unnecessary layers and elements.
